WMS/APIs for Maps: Europe

For topo maps, the following countries have made theirs available for non-commercial purposes as either a WMS or via an API:

  • GB: Ordnance Survey OpenSpace API, which accesses a WMS tileserver; includes 1:50,000 Landrangers
  • France: IGN géoportail API includes 1:25,000 maps
  • Germany: see the Deutschlandviewer site for information on what layers are available as WMS; mainly Land-based
  • Italy: Portale Cartografico Nazionale; includes 1:250,000, 1:100,000 and 1:25,000 topo maps (beware! many of the sheets are very old)
  • Spain: all maps released as WMS/WFS server. This includes the autonomous regions, who also have their own WMS servers
  • Austria: geoland.at have now released their version of the BEV topo maps as a WMS service
  • Belgium: 1:10,000, 1:50,000 and 1:100,000 topomaps available as WMS at NGI/IGN testbed
  • Czech Republic: 1:50,000, 1:500,000 and 1:1,000,000 maps available as WMS at Geoportál ČÚZK
In addition, the NASA satellite/remote-sensing imagery is available on various servers as WMS; see, for example, the Integrated CEOS European Data Server at University College London
